So I have been out of the UNITY loop for a while (6 days), and was pleasantly surprised when I saw all the new videos that were put up today. I have spent some of the last few days thinking about UNITY, but not much.  I have not had any moments of brilliance, and really only two events, one past and one upcoming, are sticking out in my mind.

The event past is the arrival back home of the World Youth Day pilgrims at the airport.  It was wonderful to see all of them returning home, exhausted in body, but very clearly renewed in spirit. It  was also an added bonus to see them so excited about UNITY, and telling us how all of those we went on the CUCP w2ere hoping to re-congregate in Winnipeg for UNITY in August. An added bonus as that half of our planning team has returned and seems ready and excited to face the long road ahead.

The second event I am thinking of is the upcoming fundraiser, basically a week and a day away.  I am excited and I hope you are coming. This is the kickoff to a year of UNITY. Because UNITY is not just one weekend. We are going to carry this mindset from September 10th, 2011 to August 16th, 2012 to July 2013 at WYD in Brazil and beyond. I hope this fundraiser is the start of something big and I just want to put in one last plug for you to buy tickets and come out in support of UNITY 2012.

Thank you for reading and here’s to everyone having a happy and blessed Labour Day weekend.

So I have been thinking a lot about two things this week: the Kiev Pavilion and all of our Canadian Ukrainian Catholic pilgrims who are in Spain for World Youth Day. I thought about the many Manitoban pilgrims who had the “one or the other” choice (really it isn’t a choice, WYD all the way!), and all of those back at the pavilion who always say, “I wonder how _____ is doing, they’re away on that trip aren’t they?”

This is just a reminder, a wake-up call of sorts, of what events like WYD, UNITY and Congress are; they are elements of choice. While UNITY 2012 will not conflict with events such as the Kiev Pavilion or the Cook’s Creek Pilgrimage, there is always going to be something else: a wedding, funeral, party, relative coming in, all of these things that force us to make that difficult decision. I am not trying to say that people should drop everything for UNITY, that would be ridiculous; I am saying that the journey, the choices, the decisions, the sacrifices, that each participant will have to make will not be easy.

This is what makes UNITY so difficult to explain, it physically only spans four days, but it encompasses much more, a 3 act continuum: the journey, the event, and the “aftershock”. In those three parts, only one thing is set in linear time: the event, the journey and the “aftershock” are much more incongruous, with no definite time of beginning and end.

Each person’s continuum will look different, brought together in unity, by only one thing: those four days.

To take our theme of going “into the wild”, imagine it as a group of people all taking different paths through the wilderness then coming to a campfire, only staying for a bit, and then continuing on their journey, but never forgetting that one campfire.

Since it’s the 21st century, I’ll give you the SparkNotes on my thought’s for tonight: your attendance at UNITY 2012 is purely your choice, and I think it is a choice that will be extremely fulfilling for you.

Night all and God bless.

Introduction – Tuesday July 26, 2011: UNITY!?!?

Hi everyone, Andrew here, just giving a list of some of what our committee will be up to in the month of August.

I am surely going to forgot something the first time around, so I will probably be updating with more info over the next few days.

August 2011
July 30 – August 1: Travis will be in Dauphin at the Canadian National Ukrainian Festival promoting UNITY formally and informally.

August 2: World Youth Day pilgrims depart (which includes many on the UNITY committee as well as those with other affiliations to UNITY)

August 6-7: Roadshow goes to Brandon for Sunday liturgy. If you’re in Brandon come out and see us!

August 7 – 13: Folklorama Kyiv Pavilion. Again informal promotion will be taking place as many of our committee members will be dancing, volunteering and attending!

August 19-21: Formal promotion of fundraiser and UNITY 2012 at Cook’s Creek Pilgrimage.

August 28: Potential parish tour TBA

Also, watch for more videos and blogs posts throughout the month. We have many interviews lined up, with bishops and others who are involved so watch for those. Additionally, look out for some hilarious footage that was taken at our planning retreat in October 2010 on location at Wilderness Edge.

Keep reading, watching and commenting as we are getting into full swing with one year until UNITY 2012 and one month until the fundraiser. Don’t forget to buy those fundraiser tickets, they are selling fast!

God bless and a good long weekend and remainder of the summer to all

Andrew
